While I was browsing this morning I came across an item about ribbons and
what they represent. I've posted a few, but the first url will take you to
the article.
The second url will take you to a web site which lists many, many ribbons
and the causes they represent.

ANTI-ABORTION - Organization: White Ribbon for Life
Cause: Participants protest abortion and attacks on human life

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN - Organization: White Ribbon Campaign to Support Men
Ending Men's Violence Against Women
Cause: Participants support efforts to end violence against women by men;
movement grew out of the "Montreal Massacre" of 1989, when 14 women were
murdered by Marc Lepine at the University of Montreal (see PURPLE)

MISSING CHILDREN - Organization: Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign
Cause: Participants support public awareness and education about programs
for missing children; started by students and faculty of Holy Cross
Secondary School in St. Catharines, Canada, following abduction and murder

DIABETES - Organization: Silver/Gray Ribbon Campaign for a Cure for Diabetes
Cause: Participants support efforts to find a cure for diabetes; movement was
developed by Diabetes and Hypoglycemia Forum on CompuServe

CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES - Organization: Silver Ribbon Campaign for
Awareness and Support of Children With Disabilities
Cause: Participants promote awareness and support children with disabilities;
campaign was started by members of Our-Kids Mailing List, an e-mail list for
friends and family members of children with disabilities

PURPLE

ANTI-VIOLENCE - Organization: Purple Ribbon Project
Cause: Participants promote education and awareness efforts dedicated to
reducing violence in communities, schools and homes (see WHITE)

CANCER - Organization: Purple Ribbon for Cancer Support
Cause: Participants support awareness of all types of cancer and the support
of its victims; idea came from Janet Rodriguez, who was inspired by actor
Michael Landon's call for support when he announced his cancer diagnosis in
1991; purple was chosen to symbolize purple heart awarded to ourageous
soldiers (see PINK)

HOSTAGE SUPPORT - Organization: Unknown
Cause: Worn to show support of Persian Gulf War veterans, prisoners of war,
soldiers missing in action and hostages all over the world

HUMAN RIGHTS - Organization: United Nations
Cause: Participants support Amnesty International's human rights efforts

AIDS - Organization: Red Ribbon Foundation
Cause: Participants support AIDS awareness and education; foundation started
in memory of singer/songwriter Paul Jabara, who distributed the first red
ribbon before dying of AIDS

DRIVING - Organization: Red Ribbon Campaign for Sober Driving
Cause: Participants support sober driving during holiday season by tying the
ribbon around car's antenna; gesture was initiated by Mothers Against Drunk
Driving (MADD)

Cause: Participants support and encourage breast cancer awareness (see
