Below is pasted an extract from a post from a Health Reform List to
which I belong. It describes a situation where a physician who had a
financial interest in a "new treatment" (and who also *edited* the
medical journal) was promoting the substance for his own financial
gain. This is happening more and more as "managed care" encourages
doctors and other health professionals to become "businesspeople".

I post this here because of the recent discussions about such things
as "magnetic therapy" (for the Parkinson's List) and
"Antineoplastons" (for the Braintmr List).

Thomas M. Burton, "Urodollars," Wall Street Journal, March 19, 1998,
A1 = reports that a University of Mich. professor of urology was found
to be = advocating treatments that used products of a company where he
held a = position on the board. Further, the Journal of Urology, which
he edited = pushed the same treatments without any disclosure of the
editors = position. This troubling case highlights the fact that
Academia is now = subject to the same kind of lobbying assault as the
political process.=20
