Jerry, I saw the comment about the pig cell implant, and what would an Orthodox Jew do, and I think I have an answer: I am Jewish, but not Orthodox, but I am repeating an answer from an Orthodox Rabbi, in regard to a heart valve from a pig. The answer on that was that since it was necessary to sustain life, it was permissible, because the preservation of life is considered to be worth the compromise. Also, if you think about it, we are not supposed to eat or drink non-Kosher foods, but I don't believe there are any commandments not to have them implanted in our brain.......The next logical question (to me) is a fetal cell implant necessary to preserve life. Technically you could say it is not, but if it stops the Parkinson's, or slows it, before it leads to symptoms that could be life threatening, I would have to say it should be allowed. Another point, why does it have to be pig cells, could they not use cells from a cow? That could solve the problem! I have to say I am far from an expert on Judaism, I would like to hear opinions from someone who is Orthodox..any volunteers? [log in to unmask]
