Ralph Reichert ([log in to unmask]) forwarded a "virus warning" yesterday without going to the trouble of _checking_ first. The "virus" of which he warns is a variation of the OLDEST, MOST WELL-KNOWN hoax on the internet today. It has been circulating off and on for six or seven years now. All of the major anti-virus vendors like McAfee and Symantec have postings on their Web pages stating just what the known hoaxes are and EVERYONE who thinks they're doing people a favor by blindly forwarding these messages are misleading themselves. People should check the anti-virus sites first. Here is a short list of the sites that mention the particular "virus" Mr. Reichert mentioned: http://www.av.ibm.com/BreakingNews/HypeAlert/ http://www-cu.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html http://www.umich.edu/~wwwitd/virus-busters/ http://directory.compuserve.com/Forums/MCAFEE/message.asp http://urbanlegends.miningco.com/library/weekly/aa030798.htm http://www.lerc.nasa.gov/WWW/CSD/News/virushoaxes.htm http://chekware.simplenet.com/hoaxfaq.htm Brian Tillman Internet: tillman_brian at si.com Smiths Industries, Inc. tillman at swdev.si.com 4141 Eastern Ave., MS239 Addresses modified to prevent Grand Rapids, MI 49518-8727 SPAM.
