Dear Barb,
Bev's death is a tragedy. Please be at peace, however. Someone so
determined to commit suicide cannot be deterred. Perhaps their decision can
be put off for a time, but eventually they prevail.
Having taken care of plenty of patients who choose to disappear, I can
assure you that it is a difficult task to guarantee their safety. Our
hospital protocol demands that potential suicides be under constant
surveillance. Nonetheless, patients have escaped from their care-givers.
I shall pray for the family, and for you Barbara. Suicide is such a
destructive event for everyone who loves or cares for the victim.
