Dear Granville, Your brother absolutely should see a neurologist specializing in movement disorders, not a cardiologist. Although I can't recommend one in that area, the physician referral service should be able to locate one for you. This drastic weight loss is unfortunately all too common and can be a serious predictor of further illness and decline. Movement disorders specialists are very familiar with the special needs of Parkinson's and will be able to help. Your brother should have nutrient-dense small meals and snacks if his appetite is poor. If he uses levodopa and experiences on-off fluctuations, a high-carbohydrate diet may help with weight regain while not interfering with levodopa absorption. The neurologist should refer your brother to a registered dietitian for help with weight regain. This is very important in order for him to regain health and strength. My very best regards to you and to your brother, Kathrynne -- Kathrynne Holden, MS, RD "Nutrition you can live with!"
