It’s time to submit your nomination for the: National Parkinson Foundation’s 5th Annual "SIDNEY DORROS MEMORIAL AWARD" First diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) in 1962, Sidney Dorros was one of the most noted Parkinson patient advocates. He helped establish and was the first President of the first Parkinson Society of Greater Washington (one of the first self-help groups in the U.S. for people with Parkinson’s disease); co-organized the first national convention of the Parkinson Support Groups of America; wrote the first ever autobiography published in 1981 of what it is like to live with PD, titled - PARKINSON’S: A PATIENT’S VIEW ; co-authored with his wife Donna, a series of essays on coping with Parkinson’s published by NPF. In addition to all the above, Mr. Dorros and his wife Donna spent 10 years of their lives lecturing all over the country about how to cope with PD. Sidney Dorros passed away due to complications of Parkinson disease on July 22, 1993. Sidney was an inspiration to everyone effected by Parkinson’s disease. He was a role model, a fighter and an educator. It only seems right that his memory be honored and kept alive by awarding others for their extraordinary achievements and work with Parkinson’s disease support groups. Established in 1994 by the National Parkinson Foundation, the "Sidney Dorros Memorial Award" annually recognizes an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for Parkinson’s disease. Nominees may include support group and chapter members or volunteers. The winner of this award will receive $5,000.00 to use in whatever way they choose. NOMINATION CRITERIA: Please submit a brief essay (between 400 - 500 words) on why your nominee should be given this prestigious award. The essay should include: 1. Outstanding achievements and contributions during 1997 2. How this individual has made an impact on the lives of others dealing with Parkinson’s disease 3. How Parkinson disease has affected them personally 4.
