New Antiparkinsonism Agents About To Enter Trials

BARCELONA, SPAIN, Apr 07 (Reuters) - The first of several
innovative neuroprotective drugs will soon be ready for clinical
testing, Professor Warren Olanow of Mount Sinai School of
Medicine in New York told 'Uniting for Tomorrow,' an
international conference on Parkinson's disease here. The goal
of neuroprotection is to prevent the degeneration of nerve cells
in the substantia nigra pars compacta, which is a hallmark of
Parkinson's disease. Current treatments are primarily directed
at correcting the symptomatic consequences of the loss of these
nerve cells.
