Kathrynne, your nutrition handbook for people with Parkinson's, which is kept out for regular use here in our kitchen, is a wonderful contribution to the lives of our Listpeople. In the light of your own contributions to us all, I am indeed very honored by your high regard for me. But, at this point, I must graciously and honestly say that I do not feel I can accept your nomination, even though the $5000.00 would mean a great deal to someone who has to live on about $8000.00 per year of Social Security. My reason is, I am very sad to say, that the extremely distressing, abusive and unconscionable treatment I experienced in 1995, as a patient at the National Parkinson's Foundation, is currently under active investigation by the Florida State Medical Board, at the request of the Maine Medical Board. With this going on, I do not feel comfortable being considered for the Dorros Award. It would be like receiving a handout from a perpetrator if I were selected to receive the Award.. My formal complaint was filed shortly after the first of this year (1998), because of the abusive and unfair treatment I experienced from 1995 through the end of 1997 by NPF officers who never helped me to recover $2200.00 I had invested in a medical trip to Miami, when I flew there for an appointment with one of their doctors, Dr. Sanchez-Ramos. I had travelled with a Certified Nurse's Aide, whom I paid to assist me. When we were brought to the waiting room for my confirmed appointment, it had been abandoned--there was NO doctor to see me. The CNA and I were unable to change our scheduled return flights, and had to go home to Maine in a state of anger, dejection and grief. And that's still where things stand. The matter remains unresolved. In fact, it is the ONLY experience I have ever had of this type, and the most horrible and devastating medical setback I have ever had. I have now yielded to the Maine Board's kind efforts on my behalf. I remain open to fair compensation for what I have gone through. I remain open to a compassionate answer from the National Parkinson's Foundation. I now wonder what subtle or hidden forms of discrimination that I experienced will come to light. But I try not to speculate too far, because so much positive work for people suffering either as victims or as caregivers. If Melinda Brown or Nathan Slewett would personally pressure the NPF to restore my ENTIRE financial loss, and also make me an offer to help me recover from the emotional tragedy I have had to go through, then I would be able to consider your gracious nomination. I am truly sorry that the pain I have gone through for three years over this still hurts badly enough to have to tell you and the Listpeople of my awful experience. It is a VERY painful wound to re-open. I am telling you the truth, so help me God. If you can help, please do so. If not, thank you, Kathrynne, anyway. Very sincerely, Ivan Suzman
