Bush Proclaims Parkinson's Awareness Day "I urge all Texans to recognize the suffering of Parkinson's disease patients and their families and to support efforts to find a cure for the disease." declared Governor George W. Bush. The Houston Area Parkinson Society in recognition of Parkinson's Disease Awareness Day will be presenting a Symposium on Saturday May 16, 1998, titled The Parkinson's Pledge. The symposium will be held at the Houston Metropolitan Multiservice Center, 1475 West Gray Street in Houston. The program will begin at 9:00 AM and end 2:00 PM. Representatives of several pharmaceutical companies will be present to discuss the latest medications available to Parkinsonians. "This is a particularly exciting time in Parkinson's Research." said Bob Martone, President of the Houston Area Parkinson Society. "Several new drugs have recently been approved by the FDA; a brain stimulation procedure similar in concept to a heart pace maker is now available; successful research involving implantation of human and fetal pig cells is underway; and a Parkinson gene has recently been identified in two families. Dr Warren Olanow, Chairman Department of Neurology, Mt. President of the Parkinson's Action Network and founder of the Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Research movement will discuss the past present and future of the movement and describe the work still to be completed for the Parkinson Research Act of 1997. When funded, this act will provide $100 million per year of Parkinson's research.
