Parkinson's Disease Symposium to be held May 16, 1998
Governor George W. Bush Proclaims Parkinson's Awareness Day

"I urge all Texans to recognize the suffering of Parkinson's disease
patients and their families and to support efforts to find a cure for
the disease." declared Governor George W. Bush.

The Houston Area Parkinson Society in recognition of Parkinson's Disease
Awareness Day will be presenting a Symposium on Saturday May 16, 1998,
titled The Parkinson's Pledge.  The symposium will be held at the
Houston Metropolitan Multiservice Center,  1475 West Gray Street in
Houston. The program will begin at 9:00 AM and end 2:00 PM.
Representatives of several pharmaceutical companies will be present to
discuss the latest medications available to Parkinsonians.

 "This is a particularly exciting time in Parkinson's Research."  said
Bob Martone, President of the Houston Area Parkinson Society. "Several
new drugs have recently been approved by the FDA; a brain stimulation
procedure similar in concept to a heart pace maker is now available;
successful research involving implantation of human and fetal pig cells
is underway; and a Parkinson gene has recently been identified in two

Dr Warren Olanow, Chairman Department of Neurology,  Mt. Sinai Hospital,
New York, New York, a leading Parkinson's researcher will present the
latest in Parkinson treatments and research directed toward finding a
cure.

Joan Samuelson, esq. President of the Parkinson's Action Network and
founder of the Morris K. Udall Parkinson's Research movement will
discuss the past present and future of the movement and describe the
work still to be completed for the Parkinson Research Act of 1997. When
funded, this act will provide $100 million per year of Parkinson's
research.

Dr. Leanne Burnett, a Houston area neurologist and Parkinson's Society
board member, will MC the proceedings which will include a guest panel
of doctors, pharmacists, and therapists.  A special video will be
presented which includes declarations signed by the Pope, Princess Diana
before her death,  Luciano Pavoratti, and several world dignitaries.

Dr. Joseph Jankovic, Director of the Baylor college of Medicine Movement
Disorders Clinic and National Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence
together with his excellent staff will assist with the program.

team have done an outstanding job of assembling this world class
symposium." said Martone.
