WOW!! Tough questions. I belong to a Christian Women's Org., Aglow
International, and actually, we talk alot about these very questions. We
don't have all the answers, but we do know this -- that God is faithful,
merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love! Besides the book that
Jeanette recommends, I would recommend James Dobson's excellent book,
"When God Doesn't Make Sense." God never promises us that He will keep
us from difficult circumstances, but He will keep us from destruction.
Psalm 66:12 says, "We went through fire and through water; but You
brought us out to rich fulfillment."

Again, in Isaiah 43:2-3 it says, "When you pass through the waters, I
will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the
flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God, The Holy One of Israel,
your Savior."

Sometimes we go through fire and water, but God has said, "I am with you
always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:20) We just need to
reach up to Him, because He is always reaching out to us."
