Parkinson’s Discovery 98

The Middle Tennesse Chapter of the APDA sponsors
major symposium on Parkinson’s Disease, June 13,
1998.


The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association
presents “Parkinson's Discovery 98.” This symposium will held on  Saturday,
June 13, 1998, 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Columbia/HCA
Corporation Building 1, 2501 Park Plaza, Nashville, TN.  The auditorium is
conveniently located on the north side of Centennial park with easy parking
and access.

Parkinson’s Discovery 98 is a symposium about the latest developments in the
treatment of  Parkinson’s Disease.  Local neurologist Dr. Ronald E. Wilson
will moderate presentations and discussions on Parkinson’s Disease by an
internationally renown panel of experts.  These include:

Thomas Davis, M.D., Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, Division of
Movement Disorders, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  Dr. Davis will
present information on treatment dilemmas in Parkinson’s Disease.  Dr. Davis
has been  a principal investigator on studies of new medications for
Parkinson’s Disease.

Ronald F. Pfeiffer, M.D., Professor, Division of Neurodegenerative Disease,
University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Memphis Tennessee.  Dr. Pfeiffer
was an investigator on the world renown DATATOP study - the first study to
find a medication to slow the course of Parkinson’s Disease.  Dr. Pfeiffer
will review  Promising Research Developments and Promising Therapies in
Parkinson Disease.

Jerrold L. Vitek, M.D., Ph.D., Associate Professor of Neurology, Emory
University
School of Medicine, Atlanta.  Dr. Vitek has been a pioneer in the surgical
treatment of Parkinson’s Disease.  He is involved in studies of pallidotomy
and deep brain stimulation treatments of Parkinson’s Disease.  Dr. Vitek will
review his work on exciting new surgical treatments of Parkinson’s Disease.

The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the APDA invites people who have Parkinson’s
Disease, families and Caregivers, health professional and the public to attend
this
symposium.  Those who attend will learn a great deal about current and future
treatment of  Parkinson’s Disease.

Background:  Parkinson’ Disease is a slowly progressive, neurodegenerative
disease
which causes tremor, slow stiff movements and difficulty walking.  Parkinson’s
Disease affects an estimated 1 million patients in the US.  The financial cost
of Parkinson’s Disease may be $24,000 per year per patient (source-
Parkinson’s Disease Foundation).  The State of Tennessee House of
