Barbara, it is nice to know that there are more success stories with home
care.
I would like to jump in here with a little more learned advice. If a PWP, or
ANYONE spends large amounts of time in bed, in one postion, they are very
prone to bedsores, these can be FATAL! They all start out small and grow, and
there are more than one way to treat them. Wound care is a specialty, there
are special facilities that can treat these sores and cure them, IF you get to
them in time. My father had a couple, the one on his foot was the start of him
losing the ability to walk. His legs attrophied and were drawn toward his
body. I believe that if the sores were treated PROFESIONALLY faster, he would
have had a better quality of life, if not more time. The first time a sore is
noticed, get it checked by a wound care specialist, and beware of anyone who
just wants to clean and cover the sores. It may be an inconvenience to make a
trip to the wound center, and maybe you can be lucky enough to find a WC
specialist to come to the house, but DO IT!
A 21 year old friend of my son Andrew, was a quadriplegic due to an
accident, and had no feeling in his legs, but was able to live alone, drive,
attend college, etc, died from an untreated decubitis ulcer, a sore on his
foot. A visit to a doctor would definitely have saved his life. I am sure I
said enough about this subject. [log in to unmask]
