The following information was on the front page of the May 22, 1998 issue of the Wall Street Journal: " The American Diabetes Association irks Illinois Rep. Porter , head of a subcommittee overseeing the National Institutes of Health, by helping with newspaper ads in his district urging more money for diabetes research. Porter champions NIH funding but opposes ties to specific diseases" It is obvious that this one person is supportive of disease research , but wants to leave the decision on allocation by disease to NIH. We are not happy with past allocations for PD research. Unfortunately, Rep. Porter has a great deal of power as evidenced by his watering down the Udall Act in conference committee last year. The only way to achieve funding of the Udall Act is to bombard your members of Congress , asking for earmarking of PD research funds promised in last year's legislation. Harold L.
