In view of current thread here about Amantadine, I thought I'd post this item from the next Current Science Reviews: Factor S et al; Neur 1998;50:1456-1458: Still mysterious: Amantadine (Symmetrel), developed decades ago as an antiviral agent and introduced in 1968 as PD therapy, is beneficial against symptoms at all stages. Moreover, it was recently found to protect against neurodegeneration and to increase longevity of PWP. But, withdrawal after long-term use (4 to 18 years) in 3 elderly patients caused acute delirium and other psychoses, that were relieved only by resuming its use. As with many other drugs, no one knows exactly how or why it works against PD. Cheers, Joe J. R. Bruman (818) 789-3694 3527 Cody Road Sherman Oaks, CA 91403-5013
