Fatigue In Multiple Sclerosis Patients Treatable

WESTPORT, Nov 22 (Reuters) - The fatigue that so
often affects multiple sclerosis patients is effectively
relieved with use of the drug amantadine, according to a
report in the journal Neurology.

In a study of 93 MS patients with severe fatigue, Dr.
Lauren B. Krupp, and colleagues at State University of
New York at Stony Brook compared the efficacy of
amantadine with the efficacy of another drug used to treat
fatigue called pemoline and with placebo . Dr. Krupp
found that patients taking amantadine reported a
significantly greater reduction in fatigue than patients taking
pemoline or placebo.

Dr. Krupp adds a word of caution. Not everyone
responded to amantadine, so while amantadine should be
tried first, pemoline should be considered "a second line of
defense," she says.
