Your hair analysis results don't surprise me. I know of someone else who
has had it done, and I'm pretty sure her results also showed a high level of
calcium. What the exact cause is, I don't know. Eventually I also want to
have something like that done. There are environmental health oriented
doctors who could probably help you to understand the meaning of you
results, and to do something about them.
Some of the PD research has linked heavy metal exposure, and other toxic
exposures, to PD. That could possibly play a part in your symptoms, I
don't know. I do know that our bodies need minerals, such as calcium, iron,
selenium, etc., and that some of them are difficult to get in our diets.
Many of them do need to either be taken in limited amounts, or taken in
conjunction with others, in order for them to be absorbed correctly. In
the case of calcium, I believe that there is another mineral (magnesium?)
that is needed for its absorption. If one doesn't also get enough
magnesium, then the calcium taken into the body doesn't get
absorbed/assimilated, and therefore gets stored in other body tissues
(hair/fat/etc) as excess.
Chelation might be one possible way of removing some heavy metals from your
system. Other methods such as fasting, or other ways of performing an
internal cleanse are thought to help the body rid itself of toxins which
accumulate. Exercise and drinking lots of water also help the body to
cleanse itself. Some caution is recommended when these more extreme methods
(fasting, etc) are used. One must sometimes be careful, especially if there
is alot of toxic accumulation, because as the toxins are released thru
cleansing, they can temporarily worsen symptoms until they are completely
expelled.
Keep us posted if you find out any useful info about your results. I think
that in general, when all of us are undergoing all of the other testing
used to help first diagnose, and then to treat, PD, that other tests such as
hair analysis, should possibly become a standard part of the process.
Think of the statistical studies that could easily be done regarding toxic
exposures and PD, (versus location, age, sex, race, occupation, etc.) if
there were a database (with its data closely guarded from unauthorized
access!) maintained showing the different amounts of various chemicals that
all of us are carrying around in our systems. I also happen to believe, as
I've said before, that if PD is possibly triggered by toxic exposure, and
the genetic link is due to a liver enzyme deficiency, then more PD research
should also be focused on the liver, how to strengthen it and to detoxify
it. All of the research relative to PD seems to focus on the brain. The
brain may be the ultimate victim of PD, but if its roots are in the
liver/kidneys, and are triggered by toxins, it makes sense to me to focus
more of the research in these areas. Research on the brain may help with
symptomatic control, but if the original source lies elsewhere, then to help
prevent it, and ultimately truly cure it, we need to concentrate our efforts
there.
BTW, there are many environmentally-oriented physicians out there who
specialize in treating people with toxic exposures or who are chemically
sensitive. I know of one big place in Dallas, where you go and stay for
about a week or two (staying in a virtually "chemically free" facility), and
undergo both testing, and then nutritional and other treatment counseling
based on the results of the testing. If I remember, I'll try to look up the
address and number of whatever national group it is that this group of
doctors belongs to, so anyone interested in locating one near them could
give them a call. I know that I've found info on the web too pertaining to
environmental health, including some national organiations and university
research programs.
