Going through my library just now I realized that I have book by Paul Heiler called The Essay: Theory and Pedagogy for an Active Form. NCTE.1996 The back cover promises a history of the genre and a pedagogy which both advocates and critiques the genre. I haven't read it yet--does anyone want to read it with me during the next couple of weeks and keep an email record of our observations? --might make an interesting Inkshed article/experience. Ps.
