Didi,

You ask what would happen should your aunt be weaned off Sinemet. The
simple and unavoidable answer is that her Parkinson's symptoms would return
to whatever extent her PD has progressed. She has, however, many more
options other than just stopping the Sinemet.

You do not mention in your posting which form your aunt's side effects take
(though I am assuming the involuntary twitching and writhing movements known
as dyskinesia); or whether she is taking other PD medications; or whether
she is under the care of a neurologist or GP. In the absence of this
information some of the suggestions I am about to make may be redundant.

My suggestions are that your aunt:

1. Consult the best neurologist she has access to. If possible the
neurologist should be a movement disorder specialist.

2. Establish with the neurologist a suitable mix of the many drugs now used
in the treatment of PD.

If she and her neurologist are unable to improve her condition by adding
to/adjusting her drug regime she might consider discussing with him/her her
suitability as a candidate for surgery.

I hope this is of some help.

Dennis.
