Hi folks, several of you have expressed an interest in my progress and I
appreciate that. So for those list mambers and other newbies hers is my
situation right now.
A brief history, I developed a left side tremor about 2 1/2 years ago. 1
1/2 years ago I went to a general neuroloist who said I had PD, after
what I thought was a very brief exam. So all along I new I should get a
more expert opinion. Last week with a referral from my local neuro, I
went to see a movement disorder specialist, Dr Freeman, who is a
professor on neurology at Emory University in Atlanta.
He confirmed that I do have PD. And that is the "tremor predominant"
type. Here is a summary of his advice. The subject of taking Selegiline
(Eldypryl) did not come up, so I am not going to take it. On sinement,
he reccomended that I not start taking it now, although I probably will
at a later time. For right now he asked if I really needed relief from
the tremor, Is it causing functional impairmemt, to which I said no! So
we agreed that I should not start taking any med's at this time.
Apparently he is comfortable with me doing without for as long as
possible.
If and when I need some symptom relief, he said I should try one of the
dopamine agonists (Requip of Mirapex).
Accually I did try amantadine for 4 months with little relief, and
requip fr 4 weeks, also with no reduction in tremor. But now that I have
stopped all meds my brain is feeling better and I am sleeping a little
batter. Although the quality of my sleep is not real good, but
improving, So as for now it's exercise, good diet and a "hang in there
attitude". The one thing that really is limiting my life style now is
that because of the sleep problems, I am not able to travel in my
camper. I have taken several one night trips this summer. Which BTW, the
doctor said for some better sleep and some relief from tremor, Benadryl
is a good drug to use. In fact if you look up Benadryl in the
over-the-counter data base on the internet it mentions that Benadryl is
a usefull drug for PD. It acually uses the words Parkinsons Disease. He
said a person could take up to 100mg in one dose. And it does help me. .
So thats the story for now.
