Actually the proper terms is text or 'plain text' for email messaging. RTF
is another option as is 'html' which is the web-look. MS Outlook 98 which I
use allows the choice of four! (plain text, RTF, html or MS Word).

I have always used plain text. I do attach (or more correctly append) my
signature automatically, but it is also in plain text format.

No one has yet mentioned the vcard attachment which I have seen occasionally
as a literal attachment to an email message. This is I believe and
alternative to embedding an appended signature. It has never caused problems
for me even when I was using Eudora, Netscape, MS Internet Mail and News,
Outlook Express and MS Outlook 98.

I have been exchanging messages with Wendy Samper and she too uses Outlook
98, but also has her mailer set to plain text. The problem lies elsewhere
and Barb and the UofT people will sort it out certainly.

I too, like Wendy, felt a little sensitive to being identified as a possible
source of grief to other listmembers. It seems that messages apparently
originated by us (and a third individual as well) were not real messages. We
never originated or sent them. Barb Patterson called them 'psuedo' messages
and feels that the problem is something to do with the UofT listserve.

Barb and the listerve techies will solve it. BTW, although I am anything but
conspiratorial, I do wonder whether this isn't a new variation of the
hoaxers who used to send warning messages about email viruses. Are they now
bedevilling listserves with bogus messages containing attachments just to
cause trouble.

All in all, I would rather see a simpler explanation. But it is all a
little mysterious.

Best to everyone.

Peter
