The big problem is not with PC's and Macs. The BIG problem is the mainframes
that are running programs that were written way back when the language used
was Cobol and not anything else. Today there are not many programmers fluent
in that language as it existed then. I have heard of retired programmers
being offered mucho bucks to come out of retirement to fix programs they
wrote in their youth. Another contribution to the problem is that many
programmers developed shortcuts and gimmicks of their own and left no
records about them. I remember reading in computer magazines recommendations
to make copious notes so somebody else could understand the programs. This
applies not only to Cobol but assembly and machine language as well.
