Innsbruck: I believe you must be referring to DBS, Deep Brain Stimulation. Clinical trials here in the US were quite successful and the Federal Drug Administration, which approves new drugs and medical devices, approved it for general use last year. Our movement disorder specialists are very happy with the procedure, both with patient benefits and with the fact that the electrode implanted in the brain does not create any permanent damage such as is left by pallidotomy and thallamotomy. Judging by your signature, I'm guessing that you are in Austria? DBS has been in use in Europe for several years; one of the originators of the procedure, Dr. Benabid, practices in Grenoble, France.
