Action Alert
August 21, 1998

NOW IS THE TIME TO SEND LETTERS TO THE APPROPRIATIONS MEMBERS!

To ensure that legislators hear the demand for increased funding for=
=0AParkinson's research, we need to send as many letters as possible to m=
embers=0Aof the House and Senate Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittees. =
We don't have=0Amuch time: the Senate returns on August 31, and the Hou=
se returns on=0ASeptember 9. The impact of a mailbox full of letters fro=
m the Parkinson's=0Acommunity cannot be underestimated. We can make a di=
fference!

Hopefully you have met with your Members of Congress in the district=
and=0Ahave succeeded in working with the media to get the message out th=
at now is=0Athe time to increase Parkinson's research funding. Now we ne=
ed to flood the=0Amembers of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittees w=
ith letters demanding=0Athat Congress fulfill the promise of the Udall Ac=
t by appropriating at least=0A$100 million for Parkinson's-focused resear=
ch.

* A sample letter to members of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommi=
ttees=0Ais attached for you to use as a guideline. You may wish to inclu=
de the main=0Apoints of our message in your own letter, but be sure to pe=
rsonalize the=0Aletter with your story in order to make it stand out amon=
gst the many letters=0Athat Members of Congress receive daily.

* You only need to write one letter. Simply individualize the letter=
to=0Aeach of the members of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittees b=
y changing=0Athe address and salutation on your form letter using the att=
ached list.

* Please send us copies of your letters so that we can keep track of=
=0Acorrespondence with members of the Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommitt=
ees.

     *    Mail:     Parkinson's Action Network
                         818 College Avenue, Suite C
                         Santa Rosa, CA 95404

     *    Fax:      707-544-2363

* Ask family, friends, Parkinson's activists who may not receive this=
=0Amailing, and other members of your community to do the same. More let=
ters=0Awill create a greater impact!

* Thank you and keep up the good work!! Our collective and individua=
l=0Aactions do make a difference and will result in increased funding for=
=0AParkinson's research.

SAMPLE LETTER TO MEMBERS OF THE
LABOR-HHS APPROPRIATIONS SUBCOMMITTEES

                                                                         =
     =0AAugust [##], 1998

[Member's Address]
[(see attached list)]

[Salutation]:

     I [my husband/wife/parent etc.] suffer from Parkinson's disease, a=
=0Aprogressive neurological disorder that destroys brain cells controllin=
g motor=0Afunction. Current treatments only partially alleviate the resu=
lting=0Astiffness, tremor, and slowness of movement. Eventually Parkinso=
n's leaves=0Aits victims unable to walk, to talk, even to move. [Revise =
for your personal=0Astory]

The nationwide Parkinson's disease research program has long suffere=
d=0Afrom an inadequate federal research investment. Direct research on=
=0AParkinson's disease has received less than $30 million a year for deca=
des, and=0Ait received only $35 million last year -- $35 per patient for =
the million=0AAmericans suffering from this terrible disorder. This lack=
of funding results=0Ain delayed breakthroughs, unnecessary suffering, an=
d a total national cost of=0Aover $25 billion annually.

The Congress responded last year by enacting the Morris K. Udall=0AP=
arkinson's Disease Research Act (P.L. 105-78), which was signed into law =
on=0ANovember 13, 1997. Now Congress must fulfill the promise to increas=
e funding=0Afor Parkinson's-focused research. The National Institutes of=
Health (NIH)=0Acurrently plans to spend far less than $100 million on Pa=
rkinson's- focused=0Aresearch in FY 1999. The NIH says that it will spen=
d $106 million in FY 1999=0Aon Parkinson's research, but $62 million of t=
hat amount is allocated to=0A"related" research that will not be spent on=
Parkinson's-focused grants as the=0AUdall Act requires.

I ask you to support full funding of the Udall Act by ensuring that =
the=0AFY 1999 appropriation for the NIH includes at least $100 million in=
=0AParkinson's-focused research, as provided in the Udall Act.

                              Sincerely,

                              [your name, organization, and address]
