TOKYO, Aug 21, 1998 (Reuters) - Japan's Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co
Ltd (4151.T) said on Friday that it was halted joint development of a
drug for Parkinson's disease with Swiss pharmaceuticals group
Roche Holding AG .

Kyowa Hakko said it had granted licence on a compound, which promised a
novel way to treat the disease, to Roche in October 1997.

The companies were to jointly develop the new compound and also explore
its potential in other areas, such as treatment of depression.

However, the companies agreed to halt the project at the end of next
January as Roche had found the possibility of side effects at a
pre-clinical testing level when the compound is used with other
drugs, Kyowa Hakko said in a statement.

Kyowa Hakko said, nevertheless, it would continue to develop the drug on
its own.
