CALL FOR PAPERS (please forgive cross-posting)

34th International Congress on Medieval Studies
May 6-9, 1999

TEACHING MEDIEVAL MUSIC IN THE HISTORY CURRICULUM:
APPROACHES, METHODS, AND EXPERIMENTS

One of the challenging aspects of teaching medieval history is
providing perspective regarding all aspects of culture, religion, the
arts, politics, economics, and private life into the curriculum and
classroom. One of the least focused upon subject areas included in the
medieval history class is medieval music. Due to its esoteric,
specialized, and highly complex attributes, explorations and
introductions to medieval music are often not included in the classroom
teaching of future medieval scholars. This paper session will focus on
presentations on how current faculty are approaching the teaching of
medieval music in the general and specialized medieval history
curriculum. This may include lectures or introductions to the subject
by music faculty members, the use of videos or cassettes, or
performances by medieval music groups. Also of interest are papers on
why the area of medieval music is not included in medieval history
classes, whether it is politics, misunderstanding, time element, or
just general apprehension of approaching a fairly esoteric subject area.

Papers should be for a 20-minute presentation. This sessions is
sponsored by TEAMS. Please submit abstracts (preferably by email) by
September 15, 1998, to:
