                Mr. Kees Paap
                4301 Green Oak Dr
                Waco, Texas 76710

                Dear Mr. Paap:

Thank you for contacting my office regarding research
funding for
Parkinson's Disease. I appreciate hearing from you on this
                important issue.

I agree that Parkinson's research is a very important
investment
and must continue. In fact, I have opposed several
proposals to
ban fetal tissue research because of the negative effects it
would have on finding a cure for Parkinson's Disease.

Recently, the House Appropriations Committee passed the FY
1999
                Labor-Health & Human Services-Education appropriations bill.
Funding for the National Institute of Health (NIH) and
Parkinson's Disease are included in this bill.

I had hoped that I would be able to report back to you that
the
committee had provided a specific funding level for
Parkinson's
research, but the committee chose not to earmark funds for
most
particular diseases within NIH. However, funding for NIH
increased by $1.3 billion overall, and accordingly, I think
that
NIH should allocate more funding for Parkinson's than last
year.

As the Labor-HHS-ED appropriations bill moves through the
legislative process in the coming weeks, I will continue to
monitor any changes which might affect Parkinson's research.

Thank you again for contacting me. If I can ever be of any
assistance to you, please let me know.

                                       Sincerely,

                                       Chey Edwards
                                       Member of Congress
