(AllPolitics, Sept. 10) --
Former Alabama Gov. George Wallace was admitted early Thursday to
Jackson Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition with acute
upper respiratory problems.

Wallace was brought to the hospital's emergency room by ambulance about
7:30 a.m. CDT (8:30 a.m. EDT) and was then placed in the intensive care
unit, officials said.

Laboratory tests were being conducted to determine the cause and extent
of his condition.

Two of Wallace's children were at his side.

Wallace, 79, has been in and out of the hospital this summer with
chronic breathing problems. He is paralyzed from the waist down and
suffers from Parkinson's disease.

Wallace has suffered a variety of illnesses and infections since he was
shot in the spine by a would-be assassin while campaigning for the
presidency in 1972.

His illnesses have left him legally deaf and with speaking
difficulties.

Wallace served four terms as governor of Alabama.
