According to a recent announcement in the Washington Post, Stanley B. Prusiner will give a talk on prions, a form of infectious proteins, on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 6:30 p.m. in the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Capital Science Lecture Series, at the Carnegie Institution, 1530 P St. NW. 202-887-8837. Dr. Prusiner won the Nobel Prize in medicine last year for his theory that prions cause certain rare brain diseases, such as "mad cow" disease. He will discuss prions and how they "may be implicated in Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other diseases". An article by Dr. Prusiner may be found at http://www.nmia.com/~mdibble/prion.html So far, the causal relation of prions to PD seems to be speculative, but perhaps further research will find more solid connections. If anyone in the DC area is able to attend, this will be an opportunity to get further information. Phil Tompkins Hoboken NJ 60/9
