Christopher Reeve appeals for registry of brain, spinal cord injuries

WEST ORANGE, N.J. (September 22, 1998 10:30 a.m. EDT) -- Actor-director
Christopher Reeve, paralyzed since a 1995 riding accident, urged lawmakers to
create a national registry of brain and spinal cord injuries.

Appearing Monday at the Kessler Institute For Rehabilitation, where he spent
seven months recuperating, Reeve said a registry would allow doctors to match
people with injuries to services.

It would also give researchers more information about the links between brain-
injured patients and those with spinal cord injuries, Reeve said.

"The problem has been people have thought it was impossible, you cannot do
anything for someone with brain trauma or someone with spinal cord injury,"
Reeve said. "That is simply false."

Reeve has become an advocate for increased funding for spinal cord injuries
since breaking his neck during an equestrian competition in Virginia.

Reeve, who portrayed Superman in four movies, also directed the Emmy-nominated
HBO film "In the Gloaming" last year and wrote a memoir, "Still Me."
