Religious Jews believe that writing the word "God" violates the
Biblical prohibition (Ten Commandments) against "taking the Lord's
Name in vain".  Such people even write the word as L-rd.  "Xmas" is
different, as the "X" is from the Greek letter "Chi" which is the
first letter of "Christ", which is a Greek word, meaning "Messiah" or
"Anointed One".
