( people with Parkinson's disease, their care = takers and others who have an interest in Parkinson's.) =20 WHY ? Because in June, while attending the fifth Annual Public Policy Form in = DC. I took a large package of petitions signed by North Carolinians in = support of passage of the appropriations part of the Udahl Parkinson's = Research Act. A package was given to Senator Faircloth of all the = petitions. A second package of duplicate petitions were divided and = given to each district representatives. We need to be diligent, to make sure, as the committee and the congress = broker things that passage will happen. The passage should include words = to the effect that these funds will go direct, the full $100 million to = direct Parkinson's Research. We need to emphasize this because through a study, it was found the NIH = was not fully funding Parkinson's Research. The researchers reviewed the = actual grants the NIH counted as "Parkinson's" and found the NIH is = padding the total with $67 million in grants not focused to Parkinson's. = This means only about $40 million will be spent on Parkinson's -focused = research in1999. Congress MUST direct the NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH to fully fund the = Udahl Act. While in DC, at the forum, three speakers related information about the = research going on. Last year, the thinking was a cure in 5 to 10 years. = This year the statement was made a cure in 2 to 4 years, all because of = the on going research. There are three new drugs on the market this = year. Research is the engine that is going to deliver the cure, and it takes = money to fuel the engine. To ensure that at least $100 million in = Parkinson's -focused research is included in the 1999 Labor-HHS = Appropriations Bill. Please call and or write to your representative and = especially, to Senator Faircloth, who is on the Appropriations = Committee. =20 Enclosed is the AARP toll free number 1-800-361-5222 to reach the = legislative hotline. Mailing address: United States Senate, Washington = DC, 20510 United States House of Representatives, = Washington, DC 20510 or your local reps. office. =20 While in DC, I met with every NC congressional representative or their = health aide, dropping off a packet of the latest information about = Parkinson's Research. I related that I was from North Carolina and that = I was at the forum on behalf of the people with Parkinson's who could = not be there. =20 I ask your assistance because we will all benefit. There are 60,000 = people a year who are diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. If each spends = an estimated $3000.dollars a year on medicine, just figure out the cost. = Then add the people who already have Parkinson's, the sum is quite = large! =20 The information I have printed in this message comes from the = Parkinson's Action Network and the National Parkinson's Foundation . Finally, the Winston-Salem Support Group meets @ Highland Presbyterian = Church, 2380 Cloverdale Avenue, Winston-Salem, the third Sunday of the = month at 3pm.=20 =20 Work for a Cure. =20 =20 Stephanie M Dorsch ------=_NextPart_000_0056_01BDEB83.FB3D8CC0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 HTML//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD> <META content=3Dtext/html;charset=3Diso-8859-1 = http-equiv=3DContent-Type><!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD W3 = HTML//EN"> <META content=3D'"MSHTML 4.72.3110.7"' name=3DGENERATOR> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2><BR><BR> </DIV></FONT> <DIV><FONT color=3D#000000 size=3D2><FONT size=3D3>Parkinson's Action=20 Message:</FONT><FONT=20 size=3D3> &nbs= p;  = ; = =20 September 29, 1998</FONT><FONT size=3D3></FONT>=20 <DIV><FONT color=3D#000000><FONT size=3D3></FONT></FONT><FONT=20 size=3D3></FONT> </DIV> <DIV><FONT color=3D#000000 size=3D2><FONT size=3D3>The people of North = Carolina need=20 to contact their representatives in Washington DC, and especially = Senator=20 Faircloth, who is on the Appropriations committee.
