Ask Your Senator to Offer Support for Parkinson=92s Research
Funding During Consideration of the 1999 Labor-HHS
Appropriations Bill
Although the language in the Senate Labor-HHS Appropriations report
includes =93nice-sounding=94 language about the Udall Act, it is not stron=
g or
direct enough to ensure that the Udall Act is fully funded by the NIH
spending at least $100 million on Parkinson=92s-focused research in FY
1999. In addition, a group of key Parkinson=92s researchers has recently
found that most of the money NIH spent on =93Parkinson=92s-related
research=94 in 1997 was totally unrelated to researching the cause,
pathogenesis, and/or potential therapies or treatments for Parkinson=92s
disease. In recent letters to Members of Congress, the NIH claims
Congress did not =93appropriate=94 or designate a specified amount to be
spent on Parkinson=92s research. It will require definitive action from
Congress to assure that the NIH fulfills the mandate of the Udall Act.
Call your Senators to urge them to support floor action for at least
$100 million for Parkinson=92s-focused research if the 1999 Labor-HHS
Appropriations bill is considered on the Senate floor. Attached is a
sample telephone script.
Call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at 202-224-3121. Ask to be
connected to your Senators.
Once connected to Senators=92 offices, ask to speak with the Health
Legislative Assistant (LA).
