The comments that I read on the line Oct 14 were so timely for my own =
personal campaign . Your reasoning greatly added to my basis. Thank you =
all very much .

One very good point that many of you made was how self-defeating our =
desire to "put a good foot forward" could be. I really like Dennis =
Greene Greene's responses to "How are you?" If you don't mind, I will =
also use them - they're great!=20

I feel very emphatic that the public must be educated to our problems =
before enough concern (and money) stimulates researchers to find a cure! =
A recent event prompted my letter to the editor of our local newspaper. =
I was told it would be printed! I hope it will. Below is a copy of that =
letter . If anyone can use the thoughts and ideas expressed here, please =
copy. Also any other approaches for my effort will be appreciated.

An open letter to the Two couples at Windy=92s restaurant on October 10:

You may not even remember us but we remember you. Our party also =
consisted of 2 couples =96 we sat at the booth behind you. As we =
finished our lunch and rose to leave, we heard you "whisper" quite =
loudly, "Is she retarded?"

Dear Lady, I wish you had spoken to me and not of me. You see, I have =
Parkinson=92s Disease. Had you asked I could have told you about others =
like myself who live with this affliction every day.=20

Perhaps I should thank you for solidifying my resolve to educate the =
public about P.D. Please read on.

We did nothing to become contaminated with this disease.. We are not =
being punished for some evil we committed -- yet you treat us as though =
we did!

We are not contagious! Yet you treat us as though we were.

We are not mentally retarded though you often speak about us rather than =
to us.

Talk to us and listen carefully. Speech is sometimes difficult.

We are not useless people. Our ears are not deaf though we may speak in =
a whisper.=20

Speak knowing that we hear and comprehend!

Even though we move strangely and walk differently our minds still =
function. Inside we are just like you!

We are locked in a vehicle whose fuel is medication. Take away the =
medication and our mind continues to function albeit burdened with the =
pains of a body that is behaving like an unruly child.

If we had cancer would you treat us this way? What about heart disease, =
diabetes or any number of non-visual afflictions? Would you look at us =
in the same way? Would you whisper so that we could hear?=20

Yes, Parkinson=92s is a degenerative disease. There is no known cause =
and there is no known cure. In the past research has fallen far short; =
but with funding from legislation like the Udall bill, there is =
significant reason for hope on the horizon. Many new effective =
medications have recently been introduced and more are on the way.=20

I am more fortunate than others. I speak for all of us who live with =
this malady.=20

Don=92t gawk! We have enough problems without the reproach you place on =
us.

Be informed. Support research for P.D. and most of all, remember that we =
are real people.

For more information on Parkinson=92s=92 disease and the local support =
group, call 786-2484.
