Ars Gratia Artis (or, Ars Gratia Mentis?) 23 Oct 1998 Are you artistically inclined? Maybe it's because you are demented. Or if you're demented, maybe you should check to see if you have some latent talent. In the current issue* of Neurology, authors interviewed 69 patients with fronto- temporal dementia, of whom 5 became visual artists during the early stage of their FTD. I thought the examples shown of their paintings or photographs were quite good. SPECT imaging or (postmortem) pathology confirmed that 4 of the 5 had the temporal variant of FTD, in which visual skills are spared but language and social skills are devastated.
