"It has been pointed out that the fiscal 1999 includes a ban on human embryo research. Please be assured that this type of research is very different from "fetal tissue" research and is not anticipated to have any impact on neural transplantation researchrelated to Parkinson's disease. It is worth noting that there are many Members of Congress in both political parties -- and the President -- who support fetal tissue research and would not allow a ban to be reinstated without a fight. A ban was proposed last in an amendment offered by Senator Dan Coats (R-IN). The Parkinson's Action Network worked closely with Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Paul Wellstone (D-MN) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) who lead the floor debate against Senator Coats' amendment. The amendment was defeated by a bipartisan majority, 60-38.
