Election Results for the 106th Congress

=09With the exception of a few surprises, the 1998 election yielded few ch=
anges
in the overall makeup of Congress. Republicans maintain majorities in the
Senate and House of Representatives =AF though by a historically narrow m=
argin
in the House. Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) has stepped down as House Spea=
ker,
and announced his resignation from Congress. Representative Bob Livingsto=
n
(R-LA), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, is expected to be =
the
new Speaker, but it is unclear who will assume his powerful Chairman=A2s s=
eat.
Although there are no major changes in the leadership of the Labor-HHS
Appropriations Subcommittees, several seats have been vacated and will be =
re-
assigned at the beginning of the 106th legislative session.

Other Election Highlights

=09Mark Udall (D), son of Morris K. Udall, was elected to the House of
Representatives from the 2nd district of Colorado. Mark=A2s cousin Tom Ud=
all
(D) won the House seat of the 3rd district of New Mexico. Representatives
Lane Evans (D-IL) and Joe Skeen (R-NM), who know the hardships of Parkinso=
n=A2s
first-hand, retained their seats. The new Congress bids farewell to a tru=
e
Parkinson=A2s champion, Representative Joseph McDade (R-PA) who retired af=
ter 36
years in Congress. Representative McDade was integral in helping increase
funds for Parkinson=A2s research in the Department of the Army.

=09Below is a glimpse of the 106th Congress:

House of Representatives

 Total: 223 Republicans, 211 Democrats, 1 Independent (5 additional
Democratic seats)

Appropriations Committee: Chairman: unknown; Ranking Member: Obey (D-WI=
); 9
seats vacated: McDade (R-PA), Parker (R-MS), Neumann (R-WI), Yates (D-IL)=
,
Stokes (D-OH), Fazio (D-CA), Hefner (D-NC), Skaggs (D-CO), Torres (D-CA)

Labor-HHS Subcommittee: Chairman: Porter (R-IL); Ranking Member: Obey =
(D-
WI); 1 seat vacated: Stokes (D-OH)

Senate

Total: 55 Republicans, 45 Democrats (unchanged)

Appropriations Committee: Chairman: Stevens (R-AK); Ranking Member: By=
rd
(D-WV); 2 seats vacated: Faircloth (R-NC), Bumpers (D-AR)

Labor-HHS Subcommittee: Chairman: Specter (R-PA); Ranking Member: Hark=
in
(D-IA); 2 seats vacated: Faircloth (R-NC), Bumpers (D-AR)

=09The Parkinson=A2s community enjoyed substantial success before the adjo=
urnment
of the 105th Congress. Substantive Parkinson's research language was incl=
uded
in the conference report accompanying the Labor-HHS Appropriations bill, a=
nd a
colloquy (a joint written conversation) expressing concern about NIH fundi=
ng
practices for Parkinson's research was added to the Congressional Record
accompanying the final Labor-HHS conference report. In addition, new and
influential Parkinson=A2s supporters, such as Senators Thad Cochran (R-MS)=
 and
Larry Craig (R-ID), were identified.

What to do Now

=09Now is the time to begin working with the 106th Congress. Congratulate=
 all
returning Members who have been supportive of Parkinson=A2s disease. It i=
s
especially important to contact all newly elected Members to begin develop=
ing
relationships on behalf of Parkinson=A2s. Educate them about the devastat=
ing
impact of Parkinson=A2s disease, the tremendous research potential, and th=
e need
for increased federal funding to fulfill the mandate of the Udall Act.

=09Remember that any Member of Congress can become a Parkinson=A2s champio=
n!
Contact your Member=A2s office. Begin or renew your relationships with th=
e
staff. Work with the Health Legislative Assistant. Update him/her about =
the
recent successes of the Parkinson=A2s community, and get a commitment to s=
upport
Parkinson=A2s efforts in the 106th Congress and beyond.

=09The 106th Congress begins in just a few short months. Seize this oppor=
tunity
to inspire the new champions who will help ensure the funding needed to
deliver a Parkinson=A2s cure!
