The process of entering into intelligent debate, listening to and =
respecting opposing views, stepping outside of one's sense of =
satisfaction in being "right", and entering the vulnerability of =
personal reexamination is constructive, creative and a profoundly =
deepening and ultimately unifying human activity.
If the objective of the exchange of ideas is to lead to this end, i.e. =
to deepen and unify, then we should engage in it with our hearts full of =
the spirit of adventure and generosity. If we cannot detach from our =
fiercely held opinions, if the vulnerability of an opposing view is a =
threat to one's identiy, then we should cease this futile struggle and =
allow wiser heads to prevail. I do not contend with anyone on any =
subject. I have introduced subjects which I expected would be debated =
with intelligence and objectivity. Instead my points have evoked =
feeding frenzies of controversy where the goals of deepening our =
knowledge and uniting us in the light of understanding have been buried =
in the dust. We must either mature as a collective, or follow the =
directive of one (Barb Patterson) who sees the unfortunate, disparate, =
and=20
ultimately disunifying end towards which the discussion is heading. =
This listserv is an inspired and fundamental force, through which all of =
us who are trapped in the carapace of Parkinson's can move fluidly - =
reaching out to each other, receiving each other's warmth and =
reassurance. When our physical rigidity begins to be reflected in our =
