With respect to Irene Rosenthal's query about finding a bad mucousy cough I understand such a condition is commonly due to an allergic reaction. In my own case I had the same problem about 30 years ago. After diagnosis by a dermatologist I discovered I was highly allergic to milk which I used to drink in copious quantities.
