SJS, and List,
Thank you very much, SJS, for your post commenting as you did, on some
of the bio-engineering research that is taking place by private
institutions and by the NIH. One of the things that impressed us in The
New York Times article is President Clinton's knowledge of current
research and his statement that all-human embryonic stem cell research
"may have real potential for treating such devastating illnesses as
cancer, heart disease, diabetes and Parkinson's disease." This is not
the first time that he has indicated an awareness of Parkinson's, and it
is being mentioned on the national stage. Our purpose in posting the
article was to not only bring it to the attention of the individuals
who subscribe to this list but to the Parkinson organizations and their
scientists as well, with the thought that they may wish to communicate
their points of view to Harold Shapiro of Princeton University, chair
of the National Bioethics Advisory Commission; and to Dr. Michael West,
chief executive of Advanced Cell Technology of Worcester, Mass., who
said he was announcing the cow-human hybrid research now "to test its
public acceptability before making further investments in the technique.
