I see my feeble attempt at humor was ill-timed. If genetics were to
make it possible, it would be a crime to create such beings, who
would only suffer as a result.

Smith treated the ethical isssue of the status of creatures who
were technically nonhuman but who had human intelligence. His future
history stories were following a trend to where they would be
recognized as people.
