The c science fiction author Cordwainer Smith actually wrote stories about the developnme ment of : "underpeople"- hybrids of humans with cattle, dogs, cats, snakes, and so on- in the 1960s before anyone had heard of genetic engineering. In practice, thobvu ough, genetic engineering can probably deliver a huge array of medical benefits, elimination of hereditary diseases (hemophilia, Tay-Sachs) and so on- I am all for it.
