Usually generics are just as good as the name brand stuff, but PREMARIN is an exception. Attempts to make the PREMARIN generics have failed miserably. Yes, I know where PREMARIN comes from. I believe it was Mae West who made the comment about her fondness for beer. Went something like "put it back in the horse." Even considering its source, it is a marvelous product for many women, and it has saved countless years of life. I used to have a mare. She was my personal transportation during World War II, and I used her to plow my victory garden. I liked her very much, but she was there to help me and my parents. With the war over and gasoline and new cars more abundant, I sold her. She [name was May] served me well and provided me with three colts [Tony - named for Tom Mix's horse; June - a name naturally following May; and Daisy - just looked like she should be called Daisy.]. Horses are a pain.. They are not always available when you need one. May spent a lot of her time out in the pasture or in the woods. At times she did not wan to when or where I wanted to go. She ate from the pasture, but she also wanted corn, oats, and sorghum. She liked her sweetfeed. FORD was much easier to find and catch. Gasoline is less expensive than horse feed when the war was over. When I was in a rain with May I got wet, but with FORD I stayed dry inside. I had only one real fall off May, but I know FORD is safer - consider Christopher Reede. I now live near Chincoteague, the place with the wild ponies who once a year swim to the mainland from the island they live on. Some people buy them at auction every year - proceeds go to the volunteer fire department - and the Chincoteague ponies become essentially pets, but they can be dangerous pets. I see no excuse for being unkind to any animal just for the sake of being mean. Using animals to improve human life is different. Without getting too graphic, this drug is responsible for the death of some 75,000 colts every year. The industry which makes this drug is responsible for some of the worst abuse ever done to a horse. Premarin is the name for PRegnant MAre urINe. That is all it is. Smash one and smell it. Horse piss. No extra secret medication. Pregnant mares stand in very small quarters throughout their pregnancy with hoses attached to collect their urine. They are given very little water, thus producing a stronger product. (BTW, a horse stays pregnant for 11 months.) The foals are sold for slaughter so some folks in other countries can have horse steaks. Don't believe me? Go to: http://www.allrealgood.com/equineadvocates/premarin.html There are a number of synthetic drugs that are just as good if not better than Premarin, and they don't kill horses. Please, if your doctor has you on this drug, tell him to change it - NOW!
