They are the leftovers from attempts at in vitro fertilization (IVF), in which sperm and eggs are mixed in a petri dish with the hope that the former will fertilize the latter. Some of the resulting embryos have been in icy limbo for years as the couples responsible for their creation ponder what to do with them. Perhaps the couples aren't sure about using the embryos to conceive more children.
