LISTFRIENDS, I wanted to make a couple of comments regarding the survey posted yesterday. Responses are coming in at a reasonable rate but I would like to see a big response to be sure that the results speak for as many as possible. The purpose of the survey is to either confirm or refute a perception that I had that the list is in trouble because of over-use. If most other people do not see it that way then we probably ought to go with the majority and not interfere in a list that 1600 people find satisfying. If there is a problem which has the potential to drive off a number of our regulars- which it has appeared has been happening - then we have a problem that we need to address. Then- we need to decide how to alter the list in such a way that the needs of the current list participants are addressed while- if true- we don't drive off people and discourage them from continuing or joining. I think that if we fail to look at ourselves we will evolve into a group who has the most spare time and largely exists to meet the social needs of our participants. That is an important need and I by no means (my personal view) feel that social exchanges are not valuable or legitimate. But if it is perceived by new members as PRIMARILY a social list a valuable function that the list used to play will be lost. People will find that it isn't worth wading through the things they aren't interested in to find something that may be valuable. I ask everyone- especially those who disagree with me to fill out the survey. If a problem is not perceived by others then since the list exists for us- by definition no problem exists and that should end it.
