Dear List,

I simply must speak about something that causes me great distress. It is
the attitude that well-known PWPs are in some way "useful" to "us," as in a
comment excerpted from a recent post and admittedly out of context that
"Morris Udall . . . is just as important to us as mjf." With no disrespect
to the writer, and I understand what the writer is trying to say, I find
this offensive and PD-centric. I am concerned also that what we say or
write reveals how we perceive things, and this is an approach to dealing
with the complex web of societal, political, and personal needs around the
issue of having PD that seems insensitive. I noticed this tendency a few
weeks back in posts that talked about "using" Ivan's situation to publicize
the need for more awareness of PD and research funding etc., but kept my
mouth closed. I am not a political activist, and maybe "we" need to "use"
Famous People to get funding for research. Do whatever works? I don't know.
I'll let you know when I come up with a better paradigm!

Fire away.

Rick
