which is our set of interdisciplinary courses on the history of ideas
and Western thought. Here is the official ad:
--
The Faculty of General Studies invites applications for a tenure-track
appointment at the Assistant Professor level. As deeply committed to
innovative and excellent teaching as it is to the highest standards of
interdisciplinary scholarship, General Studies is a vibrant
non-departmental
Faculty offering courses to approximately 800 undergraduate and 50
graduate students.

The position will begin July 1, 1999. It is focused on an
interdisciplinary and
integrative approach to the main ideas and issues of Western
Civilization.
The foundational course to be taught by the applicant is a formal
requirement of many degree programs and is meant to provide students
with the tools for success (critical thinking, writing skills) in their
university
careers. The key quality of the successful applicant is an ability to
challenge
the minds of students in a large classroom setting. A complementary
interest
in non-Western Civilizations, Canadian Studies, Urban Studies or Leisure
and Tourism would be an asset. A Ph.D. is required.

In accordance with Canadian immigration requirements, priority will be
given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada. The
University of Calgary respects, appreciates and encourages diversity.
Applications, including a statement of interest, curriculum vitae,
recent
publications, and the names of three referees, should be sent by January
11, 1999, to: Dr. Beverly Rasporich, Acting Dean, Faculty of General
Studies, University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive NW, Calgary,
Alberta. Tel: (403) 220-5885 Fax: (403 220-0068

Sorry for posting this so late. Because it is not a writing/rhetoric
position, I didn't think of posting it to CASLL, but Cathy reminded me
that there might be some about-to-graduate students in our field who
might be interested in an interdisciplinary position of this type.
Certainly a strong background in history and theory of rhetoric would be
a good jumping-off point for the Heritage program. If you are
interested, fax us at the above number with a statement of interest and
get the rest of the application in as soon as you can after that.
