To list members,

Some things are better handled in private. Privacy should not be a way to
hide from others, but it can be many ways more polite to the person being
sent mail and more thoughtful of the other 1598 who would have to delete
something they probably don't want.

Use public postings to put out things you think more than one or a very few
would care about. A question or a request for information is a proper use
for messages sent to the list.  A few good jokes - the same. Strictly
personal messages expected to be of interest only to the sender and an
individual should have no place on the listserv.

Any note I send out which starts with a person's name goes to that person.
