Action Alert January 7, 1999

Congress to Send Letter to NIH

As 1999 begins, the Parkinson's community needs to build on the
visibility and success of our
advocacy efforts in 1998. To help do this, Senator John McCain (R-AZ)
and Representative Fred Upton (R-MI) have agreed to lead the effort to
send a letter from Congress to National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Director Dr. Harold Varmus, urging the NIH to provide full funding for
the Udall Act for fiscal year 1999. The letter notes last year's
historic $2 billion increase in the NIH budget, as well as the report
language clearly stating Congressional intent for the NIH to implement
an increased and more focused Parkinson's research agenda.

Senator McCain and Representative Upton need our help in convincing
their colleagues to
sign-on to the letter to Dr. Varmus. We need you to ask your Member of
Congress to sign this
letter! Members of Congress are more likely to support this kind of an
effort if they hear directly from you, their constituents. Moreover,
working with your Senators and Representative to encourage them to
sign-on to the letter is a great opportunity to get acquainted (or
re-acquainted) with your legislators and their health care staff. A
draft copy of the letter is included (the final version may be slightly
altered, but the message will remain the same). Contact your
legislators' offices to alert them of the letter and ask them to support
the effort. When calling the office, ask to speak with the staff person
responsible for health care issues. Arrange for that staff person to
receive a copy of the draft letter (see below) as they will undoubtedly
wish to review it. Schedule a time when you can follow-up with them to
confirm that their boss is willing to sign on to the letter. Any
questions or problems can be referred to the Network by calling (800)
850-4726.

To send a copy of the letter to the health care staffer, you can:

     --Fax them the attached copy.

--Have them contact the Network at (800) 850-4726 for a copy.

--If you are talking to a Senator's office, instruct them to
contact Sonya Sotak in Senator
McCain's office. If you are talking to a Representative's office,
instruct them to contact Jane
Williams in Representative Upton's office.

--Contact the Network yourself with the name of the Member(s) to
send the letter to and the name of the staff person you spoke with, and
we'll send the letter and follow up.

The deadline for Members to co-sign the letter is January 19, so call
your legislators today! This is a very busy time in Washington, and
even these seemingly simple requests can take several days. Please act
now. You can help send a strong message to the NIH -- one clearly
stating that the time has come to fully implement the Udall Act, and
fund the research that will deliver a Parkinson's cure!
