What a wonderful opportunity if you could start the job from scratch,
without worrying about the exact dimensions of the room or the location
that the pipes are in. Alas, you probably have constraints like that. My
guess is that a walk-in shower with a place to sit down would be best, but
there wouldn't be space for that in most bathroom areas.

I faced the problem of how to make my apartment bath, with a standard tub,
negotiable to a mother who has had hip replacement surgery twice. I
couldn't find any suggestions at the hardware store, and I got the idea
that you place support bars where it is esthetically correct, rather than
where they are needed. This normally seems to be a diagonally mounted
support bar at the head end of the tub.

I found that what I did was useful for me as well. I installed a 36 inch
(0.9 m) long support bar horizontally about 28 inches (0.7 m) above the
floor of the tub. Whichever end of the tub I am on, the bar is there for
me. And were I to take a bath rather than shower, the location of the bar
would also be useful..

But this is really something where an Occupational Therapist's learning and
experience would prove most helpful. Hopefully we will hear from a
well-qualified one.
